I understand what many people are saying here – large sizes of high fat, high cal stuff is just not part of a healthy lifestyle. But…like Michael posted a few weeks back…I don’t believe Starbucks is to blame. I understand the overall health concerns. Plus, I understand that habitually consuming unhealthy or fattening foods eventually hits us all in the wallet when it comes to healthcare and disability costs. But, Americans want options - BIG options. Honestly, I want to treat myself to a mega huge, caffeine-infused, "bad for me" beverage once in a while. Should Carvel or Baskin Robbins stop selling large milk shakes? Should diners stop selling greasy, 1/3lb cheeseburgers? If someone truly wants A LOT of something, they will get it one way or another...be it by purchasing ONE mega-sized meal or TWO regular sized meals. Hey...the fact is, every so often - after a bad week at work - you can find me sitting in front of the TV with a carrot cake and a gallon of whole milk. The difference is, I look at all these foods as treats - that I occasionally indulge in by consciously veering from my usual dietary path. People need to be taught how to eat healthily and add activity to sedentary lifestyles. They need to be taught about serving sizes and portion control. Plus, people need to understand when they are self medicating with food (like me and my carrot cake/milk episodes). The fact is, large beverage sizes were here long before Starbucks - Pepsi intro’d a "mega" size decades ago to do battle with Coke - and companies have been running with that concept for years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the post isn't assigning blame. It's simply pointing out that such a drink packs a whole lot of calories. You can run with that in many different directions: you could see it as a commentary on the sad state of health of our society that many people want such a drink. You could see it as a reminder to be vigilant in making healthy choices. You could see it as underscoring the importance of providing nutritional information for food items.

I agree that for the most part, restaurants provide what the consumers want and there's nothing wrong with that. However, obviously there is some line that should be drawn. We don't permit restaurants to serve alcohol to teenagers, for example. I'm not saying this is the same thing, I'm just saying that we have to be careful making over-simplified arguments.

Starbucks will not be making any other drinks available in the Trenta size....and Dan is correct. If you make smart choices about what you add to your iced coffee or tea, the calories are quite low. Unless you get them sweetened with Classic Syrup, or add (high sugar) lemonade, or milk...At my store, most people even say, "that is too much"....however there have been a few people throw fits that they cannot get a Frappucino in it...lame. As far as Lauren's comment about having her soy latte in a Trenta...she is either full of it, or that store is full of morons.
